Hobson's Choice

Garden report

The Garden Report: I've been weeding and dead-heading pretty much non-stop since our return from vacation. The strawberries pose a challenge because they've put out their runners: how do you get the weeds out without also deracinating (isn't that a great word?) the runners? Very slowly and gently is your answer.

Meanwhile, the free sunflowers continue their quest for world domination. Chris got them free from a publishing company and only god knows what variety they are. They are massive, massive trees of sunflowers. One of them didn't make it, and I had to cut it down. With bypass cutters, with the tree trimmer! I've had to stake two of them with metal fence posts! Metal fence posts! Because they just snapped the pitiful little garden stakes in two.

The four o'clocks are blooming; I think it may be four o'clock in the morning though because they're open when we first get up. Then they immediately close. I'm planting them again though; they grew from seed in crappy soil, they have pretty foliage, and they make a nice groundcover.

The tomato plants are loaded, but nary a red one to be seen today.
