House seeds

Carpentry Lessons:

A derelict old house in the neighborhood has been torn down. It didn't look too bad from the outside; all the windows were still intact, the porch looked fine. But it must have been much worse inside, dryrot and termites and asbestos and who knows what else.

A couple of weeks ago, they did the asbestos abatement, and then they knocked the whole thing down and carted it away.

The event upset Eleanor. Every time, we drive by the house, we talk about how the house used to be there and now it's gone.

Yesterday, she asked, "Mama, when will there be another house there? If they plant a house seed, will there be one when I'm sixteen?"

It made me feel we must be doing something right that she looks on homes as organic beings similar to a tree and that she thinks they take many years to grow.
