Suck it, Heath Ledger

And now a commentary on Heath Ledger from a resident of West Virginia.

So Heath Ledger said this recently about West Virginia in connection with _Brokeback Mountain_: I heard a while ago that West Virginia was going to ban it but thats a state that was lynching people only 25 years ago so thats to be expected.

Now just to reassure all of you in other states that we have not become a rogue state, West Virginia has not banned _Brokeback Mountain_. The film was originally released in select cities and is only now opening for wide nationwide release. For those of us in more rural parts of the country, this means that people on other planets will probably have an opportunity to see _Brokeback Mountain_ before we do.

The film opens this Friday in Huntington; tickets are in advance sales since the theater expect a large turnout.

And now, just a few points for Mr. Ledger:

(1) Really 25 years ago? 1981. You think that West Virginians were having state-sanctioned vigilante executions when Ronald Reagan was president? According to the Charleston Gazette, we haven't had a documented lynching since 1931.

(2) Really lynching a big deal in West Virginia? The state that was formed in opposition to the Confederacy? Really?

(3) And just a little note on good taste and classiness... Is this really the comment you want to make in a week where West Virginia loses 12 miners' lives, men who did dangerous work to keep the electricity going for the nation?
