Hobson's Choice

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 is a dangerous age

Now that Eleanor's in preschool, she's decided that she's got pretty much all the knowledge she needs to survive in the world. Our world has become very scary.

Yesterday for example, despite Mommy and Daddy's many repeated past warnings that we DO NOT touch lightbulbs, Eleanor decided that she had better check this one out for herself. During quiet time. On our bedside lamp.

Two degree burn on the index finger. An hour of screaming. Ice water, bandaid, neosporin.

She reports that she's not going to touch any more lightbulbs. I'm still moving the bedside lamp.

And what else might she have in mind to try? We were very lucky on the toddler front. When Eleanor's peers were throwing themselves off counters, attempting to run in the street, investigating electrical outlet, and trying to find poison to eat, Eleanor was a very mellow and cautious one-year-old.

Now she's three years old and I'm wondering if we should babyproof the house again. I mean, I've still got the Cascade, the toilet bowl cleanser, and the medicines higher than she can reach even with a stool. But what if she decides to start licking electrical outlets just to see if Mommy and Daddy were right about those, too? Is she going to climb up on the toilet, get the shower spray, and start sucking it? Is she going to drink the toilet in the name of science? Is she going to cut computer cords? Is she going to try to see if she can get out her bedroom window?

Is she going to try driving the car?
