Hobson's Choice

Christmas

It's Christmas time at our house, the nativity scenes are out, and here's what we've learned:

The Bible teaches us that Jesus spent much of his time in the less savory sections of society. In our household, that seems to translate to the Baby Jesus having tea with the Cookie Monster (and Ernie, Big Bird, various Fisher Price babies and mommies, Mary, sometimes Joseph, and always a camel). If tea were a drug of abuse, we would need to be a little worried about the Baby Jesus.

Other lessons learned about Christmas:
(1) The Wiggles become even wackier (and strangely hotter) in their Christmas special, Yule be Wiggling. It also reminds you that the British Empire does have a state religion and it's Christianity. From an American perspective, it's quite shocking to see Anthony Wiggle bowing to the Christ Child. You can't imagine Elmo doing that here in our secular state. It seems a little impious.

(2) We get to have special adventures at Christmas time, one of which will be eating the marzipan they make at the bakery. I'm predicting that another will be finding the marzipan "yucky."

(3) We get to see all of our cousins at Christmas time, though Mommy and Daddy may be giving thanks that we don't have to see _all_ of ours.

(4) Learning that there is such a movie as the Muppet Christmas Carol starring Kermit and that we can check it out from our library causes us to shout "Oh, Man" and "Shucky-darn" with great glee.

(5) Who has been teaching my offspring to say "shucky-darn?" Not a criticism, "shucky-darn" is preferable to "hot-damn," which I think is what she means. I'm just curious.
