Hobson's Choice

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

nobody knows the trouble

This is what kills me about the "partial birth" abortion debate and the fact that the Supreme Court is taking it up now.

Politicians have duped their base, the Religious Right, into believing that "partial birth" abortion is part of the abortion debate. In reality, in the world in which we actually live and breathe, late terminations are usually about grief and loss. They are about babies who were going to die anyway, babies who would not survive.

Getting the government involved and protesters and legislation, all it means is that families lose their rights to make end-of-life decisions. They lose their privacy, and their grief is mocked.

Our president and our leaders like to talk a lot about evil, and I usually don't believe in Evil. But I'm jolted and staggered tonight by the thought of grieving women, whose grief has been increased and erased, for the sake of percentage points on polls and for a political party's base.

Forgive my bitterness: if men were the ones who got pregnant and suffered, we would not be here discussing this.
